How Do You Get a Yeast Infection?

A yeast infection is an inflammation of the vagina. Occurring at least once in as many as three to four women’s lives, its symptoms include painful itching and discharge. Understanding what causes a yeast infection is the first step to preventing it.
Causes of a yeast infection
A fungus known as Candida, which is present in the vagina, causes the infection when the presence of lactobacillus, the bacteria that balances its pH and prevents its overgrowth, is decreased. In addition, antibiotics, pregnancy, diabetes, immune weakness, douching and irritation can cause a yeast infection.
Symptoms of a yeast infection
The main symptoms of a yeast infection include pain, soreness, itching and irritation in the vagina and the vulva, redness and swelling, a burning sensation that is especially painful during urination or sexual intercourse and a thick, white discharge with the consistency and appearance of cottage cheese.
Risk factors for a yeast infection
Women who have higher estrogen levels due to pregnancy, birth control pills or hormone therapy are at higher risk for a yeast infection. Diabetic women who have poor control over their blood sugar levels are at a higher risk factor as well. While it is not technically a sexually transmitted disease because there are non-sexual ways to contract it, it is still possible to contract a yeast infection through unprotected sexual intercourse. HIV infection can also put women at risk for it.
A yeast infection is a painful condition that requires medical treatment and several preventative steps to prevent re-occurrences.
