Thrush

Thrush is a type of yeast infection of the mouth caused by Candida yeast. Its most visible symptoms are white patches on the mouth with the consistency of cottage cheese. When wiped away, the area beneath the infection is red and raw and sometimes bleeds. Many times, thrush is a sign of a weakened immune system; the most commonly afflicted are babies, the elderly and people with immune disorders, such as diabetes and HIV. Good oral hygiene, including flossing, brushing and using mouthwash, can help prevent thrush. Parents can prevent it in their babies by sterilizing all bottle nipples and pacifiers prior to use and storing properly when not in use.
