What Is a Yeast Infection?

A yeast infection, also known as Candidiasis, is an infection caused by overgrowth of the yeast that occurs naturally in the body. It can occur anywhere on the human body. Most yeast infections are treatable but some may cause complications that could prove fatal, depending on the underlying health of the patient.

Vaginal yeast infections

There are several types of yeast infections. One of the most common is a vaginal yeast infection, caused when the vaginal bacteria that balances pH is compromised and the growth of Candida causes an infection in the vagina and the vulva. Its symptoms include redness, itching, burning, pain and discharge.

Thrush

Another common form of yeast infection is oral Candidiasis, also known as thrush. This occurs when yeast builds up in the mouth and causes white, cottage cheese-like patches that are impossible to simply wipe away. This is painful and can make it difficult for the patient to eat. Thrush occurs in babies whose mothers have yeast infections, denture wearers, diabetics, people with HIV/AIDS or who have a compromised immune system for some other reason.

Other types of yeast infections

Yeast infections can also occur on the anus, the skin, the fingers and the nail folds. Diaper rash is another type of yeast infection that affects most babies at least once before they turn two years old.

Most people who have yeast infections should not suffer complications, but it can cause serious, life-threatening problems in people whose immune systems are compromised for some reason, whether it is HIV/AIDS or some other illness. A doctor can prescribe a course of treatment for a yeast infection that may include some lifestyle changes and medicines. Anyone taking antibiotics should stop taking them or reduce their dosage; antibiotics can destroy the natural bacteria that prevent candida from overgrowing.
